For Kirin

Dear Kirin, i love you and miss you. I know you were planning to visit me. This past few years have been so difficult. You are my brother, my homie, one of my closest comrades. Last night, i received pictures of you and Ev in the mail. In the corner of my prison cell, i built a memorial for you.

Kirin, you are one of the kindest people i have ever known; always in tune to the feelings and needs of others. For someone with such grace, strength, dignity, and sense of purpose, i can only imagine the depth of pain and turmoil you were suffering inside. I cannot help but think that if i was out there, maybe, just maybe, i could have been there for you in the same way you were always there for me. When i returned to the Bay, after living away for a decade, you and Evelyn invited me into a beautiful community of struggle. You made home feel like home again. When i myself was suicidal, you and Ev are the people i turned to most often.

Kirin, you and i share an extremely close bond. You are one of the few people to visit me in person while in county jail. You are a comrade i have confided much in. We have written together. We have played music together. Some of my fondest memories are of us sitting by the fire pit, laughing, smoking, laying the hammock, and watching Jagua run around the yard all cray. Damn i miss the bonfires.

Brother, you fed me and housed me in times of crisis. You and Evelyn were steadfast emotional pillars for me before my imprisonment. It has been so painful to be separated like this over the past two years; navigating the coerced distance between us. I never was able to put into words the full sense of grief that i carry from this distance, this isolation. I miss you so much fam.

The State tore us apart. Comrades divided by prison walls and the unrelenting pressures of the capitalist-colonial machine. Generous, principled, and wise. Kirin, you are my family. You and Evelyn are my family. I hope that you can finally feel peace. Peace brother. You are forever with me. In everything I do and think. You deserve a warrior’s memorial.

Your homie, forever
